AKA Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built
Inspired by true events. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester, (Helen Mirren), heiress to the Winchester fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman’s madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece, or for the brilliant Doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) who she has summoned to the house. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters…
Filmed in Melbourne, Australia.
Previously had a February 23rd 2018 release.
Previously titled Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built.
On describing the film, Michael Spierig was quoted saying: “audiences can expect to see a classic haunted house scary movie — but one that’s very much a drama about people dealing with grief and loss.” (4/30/17)
It’s said that audiences will get an inside look at Winchester’s labyrinthine home and the film’s directors want to prove that there’s more to the mystery of the mansion than just a ghost story.
CBS Films will distribute in the US.
Helen Mirren will play “Sarah Winchester.”
Filming was originally aimed to begin sometime in early 2015 at the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose.
The Spierig Brothers also helmed Undead and Daybreakers.
It’s said that in order to accurately depict the mansion, the Spierig brothers recreated the mansion and some of its rooms in Australia, and will wrap the film in the coming months with a shoot at the actual home in California.
Based on the true story of Winchester “a woman who was convinced that she was being haunted by the ghosts of people who were killed by the famous rifle that her family manufactured. After the sudden deaths of her husband and child, she threw herself into never-ending construction on her sprawling mansion — which features stairways to nowhere and doors that open onto walls — to appease the spirits.”
Winchester released in limited theaters on Friday, February 2, 2018 through CBS Films and Lionsgate.
Winchester arrived on Digital April 17th, 2018 and on Blu-ray Combo Pack (plus DVD and Digital), DVD, and On Demand May 1st, 2018 from Lionsgate.
